Study explains why AI agents benefit from "skills" and when they fail

Researchers from Princeton University and UC San Diego have determined that AI agents perform better when utilizing pre-defined skill modules, primarily because these tools enforce structured workflows rather than providing new information. However, the study identifies a significant scalability issue: as the library of available skills expands, agents struggle to accurately select the correct instructions, which leads to a decline in overall effectiveness.
