AI agents use roughly 600 times more energy than a simple chat prompt
Climate scientist Zeke Hausfather calculated that using Claude Code consumes approximately 600 times more electricity per interaction than a standard AI chatbot prompt. Analyzing eight weeks of data, he determined that autonomous agents require significantly more compute power than simple queries. These findings suggest that current industry reports, which emphasize low energy consumption from basic chat models, may understate the environmental impact of the growing trend toward autonomous, multi-step AI agents.
