Kids outlearn AI—and we still don’t know why

While large language models like ChatGPT have reached human-level fluency in just four years, researchers note that they still learn differently than children. Unlike AI, which requires massive datasets to process information, young children can master complex language systems with minimal input and significantly less data. Scientists are currently studying these fundamental differences in acquisition to better understand the unique cognitive processes that allow human children to develop linguistic capabilities so efficiently.
