AI’s potential climate benefits outweighed by role in boosting fossil fuels, study finds

A new study suggests that the climate advantages offered by artificial intelligence are currently eclipsed by the technology's contribution to fossil fuel expansion. Researchers found that while AI can improve energy efficiency, its primary industrial applications are being used to accelerate oil and gas exploration and extraction. This findings indicate that the net environmental impact of the sector may be counterproductive to international efforts aimed at reducing global carbon emissions.
