Google drops Gems for Skills, joining OpenAI and Anthropic in the shift to agent-ready prompt formats

Google is replacing its Gems feature with Skills, a new format for reusable prompts that users can trigger via a forward slash or set to run automatically. This transition aligns Gemini with an open standard already utilized by Anthropic and OpenAI. Existing Gems will automatically migrate to the Skills system starting in November. By adopting this interoperable framework, Google aims to streamline how users build and deploy task-specific AI agents within its ecosystem.
