Nvidia wants to cut data center water use, but that’s not the same as fixing AI’s water problem

Nvidia has introduced a new reference design for data centers that utilizes liquid cooling to significantly reduce on-site water consumption for its upcoming Rubin generation chips. While this technology lowers the environmental footprint of server facilities, it does not address the substantial water usage required by the power plants generating electricity for these systems. This distinction highlights that operational cooling improvements are only one component of the broader water sustainability challenges associated with large-scale artificial intelligence infrastructure.
