Readers rate AI-generated short stories higher than human ones until they learn a machine wrote them

A recent study found that readers were unable to distinguish between human-written and ChatGPT-generated short stories, with participants actually rating the AI content higher on average. However, these preference scores dropped significantly once the readers were informed that the work was produced by a machine. These findings suggest that human perception of creative quality is heavily influenced by the perceived source of the work rather than the text itself.
