Cursor's agent swarm suggests cheaper models can handle most coding when frontier models plan the work

Cursor has introduced an updated agent swarm system that separates complex tasks into specialized planning and execution roles. By assigning the planning phase to high-performance models and the implementation to more cost-effective ones, the system successfully rebuilt SQLite in Rust during controlled tests. This approach demonstrates that sophisticated orchestration can allow cheaper models to handle technical coding tasks previously reserved for the most advanced systems.
