Western mathematicians fear AI makes them dumber while China builds an entire alliance for it
A group of 25 Fields Medal winners in the West is advocating against the use of AI in mathematical proofs, citing concerns that the technology could diminish human analytical skills. Conversely, mathematician Shing-Tung Yau has organized an alliance of eight institutions and over 1,000 scientists in China to actively integrate AI into advanced mathematical research. This split highlights a growing global divide over the role of automation in theoretical science, with one side prioritizing human intuition while the other seeks to accelerate discovery through machine learning.
