Apple Reference Image Signs Photos at the Sensor, Moving Provenance Trust Away from C2PA

Apple has introduced Reference Image, a camera mode for the iPhone 18 Pro that generates digital signatures for photos directly at the sensor level before processing them within Private Cloud Compute. This approach shifts authentication away from the C2PA standard, relying instead on Apple's own proprietary verification architecture. While the feature aims to ensure image provenance, security researchers have raised concerns regarding whether the system can effectively verify the origin of an image or prevent tampering when a camera captures a screen or manipulated media.
