Google is paying almost no publishers almost nothing for content used in AI answers
Google has entered into paid content licensing agreements with roughly 100 digital publishers to support its AI Overviews and Gemini features. While major media organizations receive payments exceeding $1 million annually, the majority of participating publishers are earning less than $1,000 for their data over several months. This disparity highlights the lack of standardized compensation models for AI training data and suggests that only a small fraction of the web ecosystem currently receives direct financial return for their role in training large language models.
