Google's election AI Overviews are opaque, rely on few sources, and sometimes take sides
AlgorithmWatch analyzed over 4,000 election-related search queries and found that Google's AI Overviews often rely on a limited set of sources and sometimes display inconsistent or biased framing. The study, conducted under the European Union's Digital Services Act, highlights concerns regarding the transparency and neutrality of AI-generated search results during political cycles. Because these overviews frequently serve as the primary answer for users, this lack of diversity in sourced information could significantly influence public perception of electoral topics.
