AI professors are negotiating the new realities of academic research
Academic researchers are increasingly struggling to maintain independent research programs as large technology companies monopolize the high-end computing resources and proprietary models required for modern AI development. This shift creates a growing dependency on private industry, potentially limiting the scope of academic inquiry to projects that align with corporate interests or available hardware. As a result, universities are being forced to navigate a difficult landscape where the most significant innovations are occurring outside of traditional institutional settings.
