Google's SynthID watermark is hard to break, but it doesn't solve AI misinformation

Google researchers have found that SynthID, a digital watermarking system for AI-generated media, remains detectable even after significant image editing or compression. While this provides a technical method for identifying synthetic content, the study confirms that watermarks alone cannot prevent the spread of misinformation or verify the authenticity of online information.
