NASA Puts Google’s Gemma Large Language Model in Orbit
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has uploaded Google’s Gemma language model to an orbiting satellite to test the feasibility of processing data directly in space. This experiment aims to determine if compact AI models can assist with autonomous spacecraft operations without relying on high-latency communication links to Earth. If successful, the deployment could reduce the need for constant data transmission, allowing satellites to make complex decisions independently while in orbit.
